On cultural heritage and ecological wisdom
Step by step, bravely step into the forest──
That day, I had a dream.
A huge tree collapsed and broke before me,
Grandpa said: "This is a good dream!"
The cascas birds are calling loudly,
I heard this is a good omen!
A sudden storm,
Grandpa quickly took me to his home in the forest, the hunting lodge.
It turns out that the scar on grandpa's face,
It’s a record for fighting a black bear!
But Grandpa didn't have a trace of pride.
Because the Bunun people are taboo against killing black bears.
Not to mention hurting a black bear.
Lightning struck, and a huge tree fell down.
Grandpa yelled, "Tuckerton!"
The little black bear whined without moving.
What should we do?
Avoiding killing black bears is a kind of ecological wisdom, a cultural heritage, and a land mission of the Bunun people in Taiwan. ——Meko Sokruman
