Author's Note

This book is the third in the "Taiwan 123 Series." I want to use numbers to illustrate a hidden, complex cycle. The "sheng" in Taiwan means growth, life, and being.

Taiwan's seasons are not distinct, with summer being much longer than the other seasons. This book uses twelve months and twelve varieties of flowers to represent the Taiwanese year. Flowering months may span several months, so there's no precise timing. However, flowers connect us to nature, bringing a sense of beauty and offering a gift of life. While we enjoy the flowers, we recognize the many lives that live with us in Taiwan, sharing the four seasons. We must rely on and care for one another.
