If today we imagine an art residency as a temporary island made up of a group of strangers who do not know each other, how can these strangers make this intermediary period of temporary residence on the island meaningful, and even continue to maintain an archipelago community that is not bound by geographical boundaries after leaving the island?
Archipelago Empathy explores how art residencies create spaces for different island nations to perceive each other’s culture, history and geopolitics.
The exhibition was conceived and curated by Yornel J. Martínez Elías, a Cuban artist-in-residence at the Jan van Eyck Academie in the Netherlands from 2022 to 2023, and Framer Framed researcher Hsin-Chieh Lee, with Taiwanese novelist Huang Chong-kai invited to collaborate.
Archipelago Empathy interweaves visual materials, conversations and stories created by participants in different times and spaces, recording the process of encounters and intersections between different islands/languages due to artistic residencies, and exploring how literature connects different worlds and how publishing practices create new connections. "Archipelago Empathy" is bilingual in Chinese and Spanish, and was designed by Limestone Books co-founder and designer Chen Zhen.
