Dedicated to family and dreamers,
Find hope in unexpected places.
Blow open the dandelion seeds and let your wishes fly...
Because of love, we believe; because of love, we hope
Today is Carmela's seventh birthday.
She has grown up and can finally help with housework with her brother!
Carmela jumped on the scooter.
Following my brother through the greenhouse of the farm,
Passing by a crowded bus station, a repair shop...
Keep walking until you reach the laundromat.
At the laundry door,
Carmela found a dandelion,
When she was about to blow hard,
But her brother asked her if she had made a wish.
What wish should I make?
While imagining a candy machine,
Imagine my mother sleeping on the bed in the fancy hotel where she works.
Imagine Dad coming home for a reunion...
The author and illustrator who won both the Newbery Medal and the Caldecott Medal for "Last Stop on Market Street" have teamed up again to tenderly and delicately depict the daily life of the little girl Carmela. The author, De La Peña, writes in plain and restrained language, based on her own experience as an immigrant from Mexico to the United States. She uses a little girl living in a working-class immigrant community as the protagonist, presenting the world and feelings in her eyes, hoping that through such stories, children will have more respect and understanding for cultural groups that are different from their own.
