A heartfelt story of a rural girl
Winning works of CommonWealth Magazine Education Foundation Young Writers' Graphic Design Competition

If I were a baker, what dessert would I make?

When I was born, my mother left home.
Dad also works far away.
Although mom and dad are not around,
Fortunately, my grandma took care of me.
When I was little, I always thought,
What can I do for them?

If I were a baker,
You can make snacks for them!
Chimney rolls, thousand-layer pie, pineapple bread...
Each one of them is my love and gratitude to my family!

Sincerely recommend

My nose feels sore when I read the text.
Writing about family love makes my heart sweet, like strawberries

The children in the mountains have hearts as close to people as clouds and rain, and ambitions as solid as the mountains. When reading "The Biggest Strawberry Cake", I always feel like I am face to face with the little author and listening to her stories. It is a warm voice coming from the mountains!
──Wang Wenhua/Children's literature writer

"My heart seems to be missing a corner. Can I bake a perfect cake?" Of course I can! Because there is a lot of love that will make up for the missing corner. This is a wonderful book that "cheers for yourself and also turns to cheer for others"; I held this book in my arms for a long time.
──Wang Shufen/Children's literature writer

My nose feels sour when I read the words, and my heart feels sweet when I write about family love, like a strawberry.
The life we expect is round and the happiness we expect is full, just like a cake.
The author is young, his wishes are small, and the pictures he created are wonderful.
The story has profound implications and the talent is truly top-notch.

About the Author

Jin Yifei / Author

My name is Jin Yifei, and I am a Bunun girl.

This picture book was created when my father was not at home. I was only in the fourth grade at that time, and I would miss my father from time to time. In addition, I did not get along well with my sister at that time, so sometimes I would cry while drawing. During this long period of time, the pressure was actually very high, because I had to go to class and find time to draw. The school even invited the singer Quan Shihuang, but the teacher told me: If I go to see Quan Shihuang, I will not be able to finish the drawing before the deadline. I was very distressed at the time! Although the opportunity is rare, I still choose to catch up with the progress. There was a moment when I wanted to give up, but I finally finished it~~~~I was very happy when I finished it~

I am proud of myself because when others are having fun, I am working hard to catch up. When others are listening to Quan Shi Huang, I am still working hard to catch up. When I want to give up, the little angel in my heart tells me: You have worked so hard to get here~ just hold on a little longer. But another bad devil tells me: Is it necessary to be so tired? Just give up.

But I listened to the little angel in the end. Fortunately, I listened to the little angel at that time.

Liu Qingyan / Author

I have been involved in the Hope Reading Project since the first year of the CommonWealth Magazine Education Foundation's promotion. I have traveled to remote rural elementary schools and corporate partners to train reading teachers and volunteers. Now that I see the results, I feel like I have helped the foundation raise a group of children who love reading.

In addition to translating books and writing stories for children, he also hosts a children's reading program on TV, continuing to spread the seeds of reading in various ways...

Cai Youling /Illustrator

Graduated from the Department of Illustration and Animation at Kingston University in London. Previously worked as a card and stationery designer, now a freelance illustrator. His works are scattered in books, newspapers and magazines.

When I was drawing this picture book, I could feel the love and affection that Concubine Yi had for her family from the text. I hope that my illustrations can bring the same warmth to readers along with the text.
